Captivating, moving and surprising, this book is a great read
Feb 21, 2018
This story kicks off a new series from the talented Ms. Brooks. I am hooked on her stories and I can not wait to read the next book in this series. Quite frankly, she is an auto-read author for me now. I will pick up the book without reading her book blurb. I enjoyed going into this story cold. I wasn't sure what to expect. From the first page, the story pulled me in. As the story unfolds, the reader learns more about this McKay family. I'm in love with this family created from the heart. Emmit McKay is an impressive man who is big hearted and loves his girls. He wants to provide a safe hope to orphaned children. He found four girls who needed his support and he does an amazing job as a single father. I loved how the story slowly revealed a little bit more and showed how what one thinks is true may not be reality. Even the smallest of towns have secrets. Perception is reality for many and if someone gives the perception of perfection, gullible people buy it. I really thought this story was about how a man handles being a single father and finding love again. Boy was I wrong. It is more than this. This story layered on family dynamics - functional and dysfunctional, discrimination against adopted children, gender fluidity and a mystery. Ms. Brooks lead me on a merry journey and I enjoyed every minute of it. And when I thought the tour was over, she smacks me up side the head with a cliff hanger. I can only hope the next book in this series comes out quickly as I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next big reveal. This genre defying romance is recommended for readers who want to be moved and surprised.
